Ripley 6 wks

Ripley is out of Calli’s second litter, the “B Litter”. She is out of Calli and CH Ebnet’s Hired Gun Frm Zanzbern NDD and was one of eleven pups. Ripley was known as Peach girl till she was matched with her name. Val, Marshall’s human mom, is great at coming up with names for dogs and I had requested a non-girly name, as too many of those are also names of friends and family members. Quickly Val came up with Believe It or Not, call name “Ripley”. I loved it!

Ripley

Ripley is our smart girl! She has the distinction of being the smartest dog in our household. We could see this from early on and it was a deciding factor in choosing her to live with us. Ripley is also VERY food motivated. She also likes more types of food then any of the other dogs. Her favorites include red licorice and Swedish fish! She’s always listening for when someone is getting food and comes to check out if there’s any for her.

With all the dogs, I’ll often offer them some of what I have just to show them that not all food is something they want. They’ll sniff it and turn away, not Ripley! This is how I found that she likes pineapple, licorice, the Swedish fish, salsa and many other non-dog types of food. Ripley also has the best sense of smell of any our dogs, or at least uses it the most. Using her sense of smell and high desire to get any and all food she found the sink was a great source of good tasting items. We now have to stay on top of the dish cleaning more because she can reach into the sink and remove things.

One day she took a cup of water out of the sink and carried it upstairs and jumped up on our bed with it. The water spilled out and she chewed up the cup. I cleaned up the bits of plastic cup and forgot about it. Later that night I thought our waterbed had sprung a leak but the water was on the top layers of bedding and not at the mattress. Trying to figure it out I recalled the cup and realized she had carried the cup through the house, up the stairs, down the hall and jumped up on the bed without loosing all the water in it! Did I mention how agile Ripley is?

Ripley was the first pup to climb out of the ex-pens and she’d leave her siblings behind whining to join her. There’s no fence high enough to keep her in but fortunately, unlike her sister Mia, she only scales fences to join us, not to leave us. She has gone over 42” ex-pens like they weren’t there and will climb 6’ fences. Not afraid of anything, we are challenged to keep her contained as needed but one sure way is just to be there with her.

Ripley’s litter inherited the sprinkler system removal gene from Calli. While Calli has been busy with other household chores, Ripley finished the job of removing all the drip system we had in our yard. The reports have come in from siblings that they too have completed this task at their houses.

Ripley

Ripley loves her kennel and still chooses to sleep in one, we’ve just removed the door, and she eats all her meals in it too. When she spent a few days with Lucca’s family (A Litter) they reported that Ripley got under the desk to be fed. Closest thing she could find to a kennel!

Ripley goes to agility class and loves it. She gets so excited and sometimes makes up her own way of doing things. I’ll tell her “tunnel” and most of the time she’ll go through it, but she has been known to run across the entire length of it. Most dogs have to be taught the teeter slowly because the noise and movement of it is something they have to get used to, not Ripley! She runs up it and as it slams down she doesn’t even seem to notice. She will stop to get the treat I have for her.

If it weren’t for me, Ripley could go far in Obedience competition. She is so smart and learns so fast, that with a better trainer she could already be competing. I do plan to get into a competition level class with her so when we do compete she can show everyone how well she trained me!  She enjoys her training sessions so much she now comes and leads me outside to the agility equipment. When I get a cart and harness out she is ready to be the first for a carting lesson. Ripley is high energy and full of love, a real delight to live with.
