Tank is our first berner and he was born on Sept 8th, 1998 or 9/8/98 as we like to remember it. A year after seeing out first Bernese Mountain Dog and looking into the health concerns, we went on our search for a breeder. That search took us to Lisa Ebnet and von der Ebnet Bernese in Ferndale WA.
We had to wait for a year before we were able to get a puppy but we knew it would be worth it. Tank was a very easy pup and at four months he started his obedience classes and was a star student. We spent part of each week at the beach, at a house I was renovating, and took time to train on the beach sand and then on the more crowded boardwalk.
Tank is a people dog, he doesn’t really care about other dogs, but loves people. Most of the time we think he’s a person in a berner suit. He’s the dog that you can see think and his thoughts are profound, more in depth then just, “I want food”.
Tank is known as the hall monitor, he tries to keep everyone in line around here. The only problem is he really prefers they act like well behaved people and not a bunch of wild dogs:>)
When I first tried carting with Tank he wasn’t thrilled and would just stand there and not move. He’s never been fond of things touching him and will avoid contact with things like baby gates and doors so having the cart shafts touch him whenever he moved wasn’t pleasant for him. We started rewarding him for each moved foot and soon he was pulling the cart.
Tank has gone on to be a good draft dog and has all the available draft titles in the states and all but one in Canada. Obedience seemed to be Tank’s strong suit and he loves to practice with me, but we found that performing in a serious venue was not his thing.
He did get his CD in the states and Canada but it was more fun to be outside the ring then in it. He learned so fast that I taught him tricks in between learning the latest obedience lesson. To this day he will go through his entire repertoire at the vets office, sit, shake, sit pretty, bow, whisper and more, just for a cookie.
We decided to give agility a try and Tank loved it. He did it just for fun and it’s a sport that, if properly taught, gives a dog a lot of self-assurance. Tank looked forward to class each week and got very excited when he watched the other dogs run. He has an AKC title in Novice Agility Preferred and Novice Jumpers Preferred. These titles, along with drafting and obedience titles make him a BMDCA Working Dog. For this achievement he got a page in the National Club’s Yearbook and a very nice plaque.
Tanks real claim to fame is his LOVE of riding in the sidecar of our Goldwing. When we first got the Goldwing it had a one passenger sidecar and then we purchased a two person sidecar to make room for Tank and a second dog.
As it turned out Tank prefers to ride alone and the other dogs aren’t as excited to go with Tom as he is. Tom and Tank take a week long trip each summer and have been as far as North Dakota and back. The larger sidecar makes for a nice comfy ride for Tank.

Always a easy dog, Tank is really the perfect dog too. He never chewed things, dug much and doesn’t take food off the counters. He does give you the big brown eyes when he wants something and especially when he wants to be included in a trip away from home. Tank is an absolute delight and his sweet disposition was the reason we decied to get a second berner.
